Unfortunately, I have no alternative implementation for dim>1. I just testet this with matlab in 1d.

There are a few papers on the 'stable' inversion of the Vandermonde matrix (see english wikipedia entry). I think the basic idea is to compute the monomial coefficients from a stable interpolation using a different basis. Perhaps one could embed a simplex in the geometry and use Lagrange interpolation first. However, I'm not sure if the efford (esp. for arbitrary dim) is worth it.

If you're happy with the current accuracy one could also document the instability and perhaps include a warning for e.g. order>5.
