I just did some additional testing: I can reproduce the error with gcc-4.4.3, but no segfault occurs for gcc-4.3.2 (both 64 bit). Since gcc-4.4.3 warns that strict-aliasing rules are actually broken (just turn on warnings), I guess that this is FS#674.

In the trunk, I did not encounter this segfault. Note, that the trunk has been patched not to use the cast operator whenever it can be avoided.

In the light of this, I would suggest to simply close this as a known issue. Maybe Elias can redo my tests an confirm or disconfirm them...
