Just to keep the discussion going, I implemented what I think Carsten proposed in dune/common/polyallocator.hh. The test for GeometryGrid can be used for a first check (there is an outcommented line showing what to do).

Personally, I consider this an absolute abuse of std::allocators, but who am I to judge. Maybe our experts for the C++ standard can have a look at it and suggest (or even implement) improvements. Maybe we can resolve this issue soon.
