As discussed with Martin the most simple and flexible solution would be to go back to the original proposal:

The mappings can simply be created using placement new on a large enough char array member. The size can be determined by the same tmp structure used for creation. The additional HybridMapping* pointer to the char array does not waste memory since such a pointer is already present in the geometries. Using custom allocators can then completely be done outside.

Implementing this is postponed until Martin or I have time for this. Just to document the idea I've attached a prototype.
