I had a quick look at the problem. For me it worked without tweaks. I had to set the CXXLD environment variable:

CXXLD="$CXX -all-static -static -static-libgcc"

I don't like to change the definition of the libtool command. I think the CXXLD variable serves exactly the purpose we are looking for. Never the less we might want to add configure support for this variable and add an option to configure to build completely static executables.

Markus: could you please verify that this approach works also on Jugene?
