I don't think having such a change in the release is a good idea. It will be immature in any case and there seems little interest in this fast index method (see improved MCMGMapper).

Moreover, while both semantics of the method index are mathematically equivalent, "global index" is more expensive to compute. The same holds true for the conversion of "global index" to "local index". I think we should keep such things in mind.
