I just found a old patch of mine which puts the Mapping into a char array. The bad news is that the diff was taken agains revision 6641 and does not correctly apply anymore. Moreover, it went a bit too far and did not store the pointer but used a reinterpret_cast.

Maybe it is useful in the change towards array-stored Geometries, though.
