Here is a revision of the patch, as a diff of my git-svn head against the current trunk.
I incorporated both of Carsten's suggestions above, and a working default constructor
for BasicGeometry has also been implemented.  However, one issue remains, which is that
the patch in its current form prevents the genericreferenceelements from compiling.
The problem is the line 528

            mappings[ codimVariable ][ i ] = refMapping.template trace< codim >( i );

Carsten & Martin: can one of you please have a look at that?
