As one of the external grid implementors, I would absolutely support moving as many template arguments as possible into Traits classes, if just because it removes the need for ugly hacks related to the chicken-and-egg problem with the grid and its components.

As to the work such a change would require and the possibility of providing backward compatibility hacks, I don't know whether to bother with that. The number of grid implementors is quite small, and whoever implements that backward compatibility code might easily spend much more time doing that than it would take to just clean up
the real implementations.
