I am not convinced this should be in 2.2. Maybe the patch is a good idea, but at only a few days before branching it seems too late to include late-night interface extensions.  Also, do you actually need those 5d elements, or were you just playing around?

Thirdly: even a bad implementation should not take > 4.5GB to compile, and I tend to see this as a compiler bug.  Did you consider filing a bug for gcc?

What does clang do?

That part you mentioned about the volume always being double is interesting, though.  Can we please have that as a separate patch?
