Somehow I don't understand you. A day before yesterday you were encouraging last-minute interface changes and today you think they are too late. However, I do agree that it is late and I do want the opionion of other developers.

Actually I do want to use my code on an at least 6-dimensional structured grid (i.e., I only care for the cube).

I cannot judge whether it is a gcc bug or not, so I won't file a bug report into the blue. This extremely heavy template code might just cause the symbol tables to be this large. Anyway, the reference element is a central piece in the DUNE code and should not cause this kind of problems.

With respect to clang and other gcc versions: Maybe my fellow developers could have a look, too. I think it is a bad idea to make a decision based on a single system (even if I use 20 different compiler versions).

Replacing the type for volume is absolutely trivial (I guess you can even replace all uses of double by ctype).
