I do not think this central enough to possibly destabilize the
release. It does not add any functionality, fix a bug, or
make the transition to this release easier for people...

If we do such a change now, I would suggest not to deprecate
but just to have ReferenceElement and GenericReferenceElement
both and to deprecate in the trunk directly after the release.
This has the advantage of making portable code this and the next
release easier.
