To sum this up a little: you guys are of course free to branch, and in that branch replace the old build system by a cmake one.  However the core developers (I think/hope everyone agrees with me on this) will not judge whether the cmake build system can replace the old one in mainline before your implementation has addressed all of Christian's points.  And even when/if it does, we reserve the right to reject your work.

Harsh words, I know, but not to be taken personally!  In my eyes this is the current consensus, and if you are still interested you can start working.
