Python should definitly not be a requirement for dune-common and you should not get any python flags implicitly. In view of the valgrind issues I support Roberts suggestion that you have to enable it by a configure switch.

Perhaps the used python version is not such a big issue since the main problem is that python >=3.0 does no longer support non-unicode strings and hence the respective api is gone.
