The deprecation warning tells a grid mainainer that he/she needs to do something.  My experience is that grid implementations still compile when the default is switched, but may crash in strange ways.

If I understand your LocalGeometries issue correctly, you now want to be able to have it both ways again after all, right?  You want to pass out the global geometries by value, and the local ones by reference?  Without measuring performance I cannot judge how important that really is.  However, revisiting our decision again before the release is not something I support.
