I think we should branch now, without the changes decided upon in Heidelberg.  The differences between 1.1 and the current head are already considerable.  We should not make it too hard for users to go from one version to the next.  I know its all done with deprecation, but still.

I propose to branch before Christmas and release in January.  I am tempted to wait until the automated test system comes back online, but knowing that there are automatic tests running in Freiburg makes that less important.
