I revised the first patch version a bit. The above patch contained a bug. Now for my finite volume benchmark example it's 40% faster then the dune-grid-1.1 version and only 30% slower then YaspGrid. 
It's not perfect but I call it a start. 

To apply the patch change the directory to dune-grid-1.1/grid 
and call 

patch -p0 < sgrid-1.1.patch
