@Martin: That indeed surprising to me. As far as I understand the grid paper all entities have a single associated geometry mapping. Having different orientations depending on from where you got the EP seems to contradict this and would not only be an interface but also a conceptional change.

I don't consider removing the check an interface change, but a bugfix since this consistency is not stated anywhere.

If anyone really want's to require this consistency it would be nice if he could provide a link to a paper showing that such orientation does always exist and that there is a fast algorithm to determine one.

In fact I doubt that the later is possible without having to determine a new orientation (and thus a new geometry mapping) for existing elements after refinement.
