I'm not judging which behavior is intended, yet. All I'm saying is that the grid check is, at least for me, part of the interface documentation. If there is a contradiction in the documentation, then it should be discussed.

Two other aspects I have in mind are:
1) Could the author of the test enlighten us to its reason?
2) I think what you actually mean is not the orientation (which is either negative or positive) but what we often all the "twist" (they coincide in 1d, of course).

I also think that this discussion has important consequences to handling finite element spaces and, hence, I think it should be discussed thoroughly (on a meeting).
