I'm not sure about what you call the "broader community". In your case we could make your life easier, but all those users familiar with the current autotools system have to start over again. Thus this is no valid reason from my point of view. I know that the current system is not easy, but before to a switch we have to look at the facts and the trouble in the current system I nothing you could see when building just a single project... in that case autotools are also very straight forwards and the documentation very good. So the main question for me is (besides the effort we have to invest) "how does cmake behave in our complex setting". And I didn't find the answers yet... Perhaps everything will be great and we will all want to switch to cmake, but perhaps we stumble
over some major difficulties. I'm sure that everything is doable, but how much time do we have to invest to get everything to the point where we are today?

btw: according to ohloh automake and cmake have roughly the same amount of projects using them (for the last 3 years, automake being a bit more popular)
