I tested the original file from Martin with g++ 4.7 with -O2 and surprisingly it eat only 1.3 GB of RAM for dim=4.

I am willing to ask the GCC guys about our problem here and whether this is to be expected. How would a minimal example look like? Just put all reference element files together, strip all the unrelated Dune stuff? Or should I remove some headers and boil it down? Do you have some hints?
